Study Notes — Numbers 22
6 sectionsNumbers 22 presents one of Scripture's most unusual and instructive accounts: the story of Balaam, a pagan prophet hired to curse Israel, and his remarkable encounter with the angel of the Lord. As Israel encamps on the plains of Moab, King Balak becomes terrified of this vast multitude and desperately seeks to neutralize the threat through a curse. What unfolds is a dramatic narrative of spiritual conflict, divine restraint, and a humble donkey becoming an instrument of God's will. This chapter illustrates a vital biblical principle: no curse can stand against God's blessed people, and God will sovereignly protect His purposes regardless of human opposition.
Israel has defeated the Amorites and now camps in the plains of Moab near Jericho (v. 1–2). King Balak surveys the situation and is overwhelmed with dread (v. 3). The language is vivid: he compares Israel's potential appetite to consume his land as an ox consuming grass (v. 4). In his panic, Balak takes counsel with the elders of Midian and devises a strategy: he will hire Balaam, a renowned diviner from Pethor, to curse Israel (vv. 5–7). Balak sends messengers with payment for divination, believing that a supernatural curse might accomplish what military force cannot. This reveals the spiritual worldview of the ancient Near East—curses and blessings were understood to carry real power, and Balak hopes to manipulate cosmic forces against God's people.
Significantly, Balaam's initial response shows religious awareness: he asks the Moabite princes to lodge while he inquires of the Lord (v. 8). God comes to Balaam and explicitly forbids him to curse Israel, stating a profound truth: "thou shalt not curse the people: for they are blessed" (v. 12). The blessing of God cannot be reversed by human incantation or malice. Balaam obeys this first command and dismisses the princes (v. 13–14). His initial obedience is commendable, yet the narrative hints at internal conflict: Balaam's reputation and financial incentive create pressure to reconsider.
Balak sends a larger, more distinguished delegation with greater promises of honor and wealth (vv. 15–17). Balaam's response is instructive: he declares he cannot transgress God's word even for a house full of silver and gold (v. 18). Yet he asks them to wait another night (v. 19). God's second message is conditional and surprising: "If the men come to call thee, rise up, and go with them; but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do" (v. 20). God permits Balaam to go but restricts his speech to God's words alone. Balaam saddles his donkey and departs (v. 21), but God's anger is kindled because he went (v. 22). Balaam's heart has shifted from obedience to reluctant compliance motivated by greed.
The angel of the Lord positions himself to oppose Balaam's journey (v. 22). Remarkably, the donkey perceives what Balaam cannot: the angel with drawn sword blocks the way. Three times the donkey turns aside, and three times Balaam strikes her in anger (vv. 23–27). Then the Lord opens the donkey's mouth, and she speaks—the only talking animal in Scripture besides the serpent in Genesis. The donkey's question reveals her faithful service and innocent suffering (vv. 28–30). Finally, the Lord opens Balaam's eyes to see the angel (v. 31), and he immediately prostrates himself in terror and confession.
The angel explains that he came to oppose Balaam's perverse course (v. 32) and notes that only the donkey's obedience saved his life (v. 33). Balaam confesses his sin (v. 34) and is told to proceed, with the restriction repeated: speak only what God directs (v. 35). The chapter closes with Balaam meeting Balak and acknowledging he can speak only God's words (v. 38), then ascending to Baal's high places (vv. 39–41).
Balaam's account warns us that spiritual knowledge without obedient hearts opens us to self-deception and divine resistance. Though Balaam knew God's will, he was drawn toward disobedience by worldly incentives. His donkey—humble and submissive—models faithfulness better than the prophet himself. We too must guard our hearts against the subtle compromises that begin when we acknowledge God's will but delay in surrendering to it. God's blessings upon His people remain secure, and those who resist His purposes will ultimately find their opposition fruitless.
