Overview
The Bible acknowledges sorrow as a genuine human experience, from the grief of losing loved ones to the anguish of facing trials. Yet throughout Scripture, we see God's tender compassion toward the sorrowful. He hears our cries, understands our pain, and works to bring us through affliction to joy and hope.
Key Scriptures
"And the ransomed of the Lord shall return and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away" (Isaiah 35:10, ESV).
"And the Lord said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows" (Exodus 3:7, KJV).
"And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground" (Luke 22:44, NIV)—Jesus experienced profound sorrow in Gethsemane.
