Aholiab

Aholiab was a skilled craftsman from the tribe of Dan whom God appointed to help Bezalel build the tabernacle and its furnishings.

God's Divine Appointment

Aholiab, whose name means "Father's tent" or "tent of the father," was specifically chosen by God to serve as a master craftsman in constructing the tabernacle. In Exodus 31:6, the Lord tells Moses, "And I, indeed I, have appointed with him Aholiab the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan; and I have put skill in all the skillful workers, that they may make all that I have commanded you." This divine appointment reveals that God doesn't just call people to spiritual ministry—He also calls and equips individuals for practical service that supports His purposes.

Aholiab worked alongside Bezalel of the tribe of Judah as a co-leader in this monumental construction project. While Bezalel is often mentioned first and given primary recognition, Aholiab's partnership was essential. God didn't intend for this sacred work to be accomplished alone, but through collaboration between gifted individuals from different tribes, demonstrating the importance of teamwork in God's kingdom work.

Skilled Craftsmanship for Sacred Purposes

Exodus 35:34 reveals that both Bezalel and Aholiab were given the ability to teach others: "And He has put in his heart the ability to teach, in him and Aholiab the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan." This wasn't merely about personal giftedness—God equipped them to multiply their abilities through training others. The tabernacle project required numerous skilled workers, and these two men served as master craftsmen who could develop the talents of their fellow Israelites.

The work they supervised included intricate embroidery, metalwork, woodcarving, and the precise construction of the tabernacle's furnishings according to God's detailed specifications. Exodus 36:1-2 emphasizes that they worked "according to all that the Lord had commanded" and that "the Lord had put skill and understanding" in them. Their craftsmanship wasn't simply artistic expression—it was worship through excellence, creating a dwelling place where God would meet with His people.

Lessons for Modern Believers

Aholiab's example teaches us that God values and uses all kinds of abilities in His service. Whether we're called to preach, teach, build, create, or serve in practical ways, our gifts come from God and can be used for His glory. Like Aholiab, we're called to excellence in whatever work God gives us, whether it seems "spiritual" or "secular." His willingness to work under Bezalel's leadership also demonstrates the importance of humility and teamwork in ministry.

Furthermore, Aholiab's teaching ministry reminds us that part of using our gifts well involves helping others develop theirs. When God blesses us with abilities, we have opportunities to mentor and train the next generation, multiplying our impact for His kingdom.
