Zemarites

The Zemarites were a Canaanite people descended from Canaan, son of Ham, mentioned in the genealogies of Genesis and Chronicles as inhabitants of ancient Phoenicia.

Overview

The Zemarites were one of the Canaanite nations listed in the Table of Nations, descended from Canaan through Ham. They appear to have been a maritime people associated with the coastal regions of Phoenicia in the ancient Near East. Though little is known about them individually, their inclusion in Scripture's genealogical records demonstrates God's sovereignty over all nations and peoples.

Key Scriptures

"The Canaanites spread out, and the territory of the Canaanites extended from Sidon in the direction of Gerar as far as Gaza, and in the direction of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha. These are the sons of Ham, by their families, by their languages, in their lands and nations." (Genesis 10:19-20, ESV)

"Canaan became the father of Sidon his firstborn, and Heth, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, and the Girgashites, and the Hivites, and the Arkites, and the Sinites, and the Arvadites, and the Zemarites, and the Hamathites." (1 Chronicles 1:13-16, NASB)
