Balak son of Zippor was the Moabite king when Israel approached the Promised Land. Having seen Israel defeat the Amorites, he allied with Midian and sent for Balaam. He took Balaam to three different high places to curse Israel, but each time Balaam blessed them instead. Frustrated, Balak dismissed Balaam. However, the subsequent idolatry at Peor (involving Balaam's advice) caused Israel's defeat. Balak's name represents the futile opposition of worldly powers against God's purposes.
