Asaph was one of three Levites (with Heman and Ethan) placed over the music of the Tabernacle. He played cymbals before the Ark of the Covenant. His descendants continued as a guild of musicians and prophets in the Temple. The Psalms of Asaph (Psalms 50, 73-83) deal with the problem of evil, the prosperity of the wicked, and God's judgment. One of his descendants, also named Asaph, served as a gatekeeper and recorder under the Persian king Artaxerxes.
