Overview
Shebna served as scribe and secretary in King Hezekiah's administration during Assyria's siege of Jerusalem. He appears prominently in negotiations with the Assyrian envoys, speaking in Aramaic alongside other officials. However, Isaiah condemned him for his pride, self-reliance, and improper tomb-building, declaring God would remove him from his honored position.
Key Scriptures
"Thus says the Lord GOD of hosts, 'Come, go to this steward, To Shebna, who is in charge of the royal household'" (Isaiah 22:15, NASB). "I will drive you away from your office, and you will be pulled down from your position" (Isaiah 22:19, NIV). "In that day I will call My servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and I will clothe him with your tunic and tie your sash securely about him" (Isaiah 22:20, NASB).
Application
Shebna's downfall teaches believers to guard against pride in their positions and remember that all authority ultimately belongs to God, not human achievement.
