Overview
Shaphan served as scribe and secretary under King Josiah of Judah. He is best known for his role in discovering the Book of the Law during temple repairs (2 Kings 22:8-10). His influence extended throughout Judah's government, and his family members—particularly his son Ahikam—became protectors of the prophet Jeremiah during the turbulent final years before Jerusalem's fall.
Key Scriptures
"Then Shaphan the secretary said to the king, 'Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.' And Shaphan read it before the king" (2 Kings 22:10, ESV).
"But the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah so that he was not given over to the people to put him to death" (Jeremiah 26:24, ESV).
"So Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard, and Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, was appointed governor over the land" (Jeremiah 40:5-6, ESV).
Application
Shaphan's example reminds us that faithful service in secular authority and protection of God's messengers reflects true devotion to His Word.
