Overview
Throughout the Gospels, Jesus attracted large crowds of ordinary people who were astonished by His teaching and works. These common people recognized an authority in Jesus that differed from the religious leaders of their day, and their amazement at His words and miracles became a catalyst for faith and discipleship.
Key Scriptures
"And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes" (Matthew 7:28, ESV).
"When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men" (Matthew 9:8, ESV).
"Never was anything like this seen in Israel" (Matthew 9:33, ESV).
