Annas

A high priest who served from AD 6-15 and remained a powerful religious figure behind the scenes during the trials of Jesus and the early apostles.

Though officially replaced by his son-in-law Caiaphas, Annas retained the title and authority of high priest. Jesus was first brought to Annas for questioning after His arrest before being sent to Caiaphas. Annas asked Jesus about His disciples and His teaching; Jesus replied that He had spoken openly. This exchange led to Jesus being struck by an officer. Later, Peter and John were brought before Annas after healing a lame man.
