Azgad

The ancestor of a family of exiles who returned to Jerusalem from Babylon with Zerubbabel and later signed Nehemiah's covenant.

Azgad is recorded as the head of a family clan numbering 1,222 men who returned under Zerubbabel's leadership. The name means "strong is Gad" or "Gad is mighty." Later, during Ezra's time, some of Azgad's descendants had married foreign women and were among those who pledged to divorce them. A representative of the family (likely Jahaziah) stood with Ezra during the investigation. The clan also signed Nehemiah's binding agreement to follow God's law.
