Overview
Leprosy was a contagious skin disease in ancient Israel that caused severe social and spiritual isolation. The Mosaic law provided detailed instructions for diagnosis, isolation, and restoration, emphasizing both God's concern for public health and His gracious provision for cleansing and reintegration into the covenant community.
Key Scriptures
"When the plague of leprosy is in a person, he shall be brought to the priest" (Leviticus 13:9, ESV). "If the disease covers all his skin, he shall pronounce him clean of the plague; it has all turned white, and he is clean" (Leviticus 13:13, ESV). "When he who has the discharge is cleansed of his discharge, then he shall count for himself seven days for his cleansing, and wash his clothes. And he shall bathe his body in running water and shall be clean" (Leviticus 15:13, ESV).
Application
Just as God provided a path for the leper's restoration through priestly examination and cleansing rituals, Jesus offers complete spiritual cleansing from the leprosy of sin through faith in His redemptive work.
