Amos (the Prophet)

A shepherd and sycamore-fig farmer from Tekoa (Judah) whom God called to prophesy judgment against Israel (the northern kingdom) during a time of prosperity.

Amos was not a professional prophet or the son of a prophet; he was a rural herdsman. He preached at Bethel, the center of Jeroboam II’s idolatry, proclaiming that God would judge Israel’s social injustice, religious hypocrisy, and oppression of the poor. Amaziah (priest of Bethel) told him to flee to Judah, but Amos replied, “I was no prophet... but the Lord took me... and said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.” His messages include famous lines: “Let justice roll down like waters.” Note: Please Read the entire Book of Amos
