Azel was a son of Eleasah and a descendant of Merib-baal (Mephibosheth). His genealogy appears in the book of Chronicles as part of the family records of Benjamin. He had six sons, and his descendants continued into the post-exilic community. The Chronicler preserves these genealogies to establish Saul's lineage had not completely perished and to connect returning exiles to pre-exilic tribal identities.
