Alexander (the Coppersmith)

A metalworker in Ephesus who did great harm to the Apostle Paul and opposed his preaching of the gospel.

This Alexander is distinguished from other biblical Alexanders (e.g., Alexander the Great, Alexander the relative of the high priest). Paul warns Timothy about him: “Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works.” Paul notes that Alexander “greatly withstood our words” and advises Timothy to beware of him. Some scholars identify him with an apostate mentioned in 1 Timothy 1:20, delivered to Satan for blasphemy.
