Justification

Justification is God's declaration that sinners are righteous through faith in Christ alone, not by works of the law. It is the cornerstone of the gospel, in which God credits Christ's righteousness to believers and removes their guilt before Him.

Overview

Justification means to be declared righteous by God. It is not a process of becoming righteous, but a legal declaration that happens at salvation when a sinner trusts in Christ. God imputes Christ's righteousness to the believer and no longer counts their sins against them. This gift is received through faith alone, not earned through personal merit or good works.

Key Scriptures

"But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness" (Romans 4:5, NASB).

"Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned" (Romans 3:23, ESV). "But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe" (Romans 3:21-22, ESV).

Application

Rest in the truth that your acceptance before God depends entirely on Christ's finished work, not your performance or worthiness.
