Chapter Commentary — Romans 7
Chapter Overview

Chapter Overview

Romans 7 addresses one of the deepest struggles of the Christian life: the conflict between our new identity in Christ and the persistent pull of our sinful nature. Paul uses the illustration of marriage to explain how believers have been released from the law's dominion through Christ's death, yet he candidly describes the ongoing battle within himself between desiring to do good and actually accomplishing it. This chapter answers the question: Is the law sinful? (No—but sin uses the law to expose our helplessness) and How do we find victory? (Through Jesus Christ alone). Understanding Romans 7 is essential for grasping both our liberation in Christ and our continued need for His grace.

Verses 1–5: Released from the Law Through Christ's Death

Paul opens with a legal illustration: just as a widow is freed from marital obligation when her husband dies, so believers are released from the law's authority through Christ's death. The law has power over us only while we live under it; when we die (in Christ), we are loosed from its dominion. This doesn't mean the law is abolished—it means we are no longer under its power to condemn us. Verses 4–5 explain the purpose: we are now "married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead," so that we bear fruit to God rather than fruit unto death. When we were "in the flesh" (living under the law's power), the sinful passions stirred up by the law worked death in us. Now we serve in "newness of spirit"—a living, personal relationship with Christ—rather than in mere external obedience to rules.

Application: If you feel condemned by the law or trapped by rules, remember you belong to Christ. The law exposes sin but cannot save; only union with the risen Christ liberates us to truly serve God.

Verses 6–12: The Law Is Good, But Sin Is Deadly

Paul now addresses a crucial objection: Is the law itself sinful? His answer is emphatic: "God forbid." The law is holy, just, and good. However, the law reveals sin. Before the commandment came, Paul "was alive"—he was spiritually unaware. But when God's standard was presented, sin was exposed, and Paul "died" spiritually. The commandment intended for life (obedience bringing blessing) became the instrument of death, not because the law is evil, but because sin exploited it to increase transgression. Sin used the good law as an opportunity to provoke rebellion and display its true nature.

Application: When God's Word convicts you of sin, don't blame the Bible—thank God that He cares enough to show you the truth. The law serves us by revealing our need for grace.

Verses 13–25: The Struggle of the Divided Will

In the most autobiographical section, Paul describes the agonizing civil war within the believer. In verses 13–20, he establishes that the law is good, but he himself is "carnal, sold under sin." He does what he hates and fails to do what he loves—a paradox that shows sin's deceptive power. Verses 21–23 identify the root: there are two "laws" at war—the law of God (which he delights in after the "inward man") and the law of sin in his flesh. This inward delight in God's law marks Paul as a believer; an unregenerate person does not delight in God's law.

Verse 24 is Paul's anguished cry: "O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me?" But verse 25 immediately turns to thanksgiving—Jesus Christ is the Deliverer. With his mind, Paul serves God's law; but the flesh still wars against it. This honest admission reflects Christian reality: we are justified (right with God) but not yet fully sanctified (completely transformed).

Application: Your struggle with sin doesn't disqualify you from Christ—it confirms that you are alive in Him and sensitive to His Spirit. Victory comes not through willpower alone, but through gratitude for Christ's work and reliance on His grace.

Application for Today

Romans 7 invites us to stop hiding our inner conflicts and admit the truth: the Christian life is not always triumphant feelings, but often a battle. Yet this battle itself is evidence of new life in Christ. Your groaning over sin, your hatred of what you do, your desire to obey God—these are marks of the Holy Spirit's work. When you falter, remember verse 25: "I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord." He is your Deliverer, not just from sin's penalty, but from sin's power—progressively, as you yield to His Spirit. Press on in faith.
