Overview
The Jebusites were among the Canaanite nations inhabiting the Promised Land before Israel's settlement. They controlled Jerusalem, which they considered impregnable due to its fortified position. David's conquest of this stronghold fulfilled God's promise to give Israel the land and established Jerusalem as the political and spiritual center of the kingdom.
Key Scriptures
"David captured the fortress of Zion—which is the City of David" (2 Samuel 5:7, NIV). "The Lord said to Moses, 'I will send an angel before you... the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites and Jebusites. And I will wipe them out'" (Exodus 23:23, NIV). "The people of Israel lived among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. And they took their daughters as wives for themselves and gave their own daughters to their sons" (Judges 3:5-6, ESV).
Application
The Jebusites remind us that God fulfills His promises to His people, and that obedience to His commands—including separation from worldly influences—is essential to possessing spiritual victory.
