Heredity

Heredity addresses how sin and righteousness are transmitted through generations, and establishes that while children may experience consequences of parental sin, each person bears individual responsibility before God.

Overview

The Bible acknowledges that children may suffer temporal consequences from parental sin and that inherited tendencies toward sin exist due to our fallen nature. However, Scripture clearly establishes that spiritual accountability is personal—children are not condemned for their parents' sins, and each generation must choose obedience to God.

Key Scriptures

"You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments" (Exodus 20:5-6, ESV).

"The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, nor the father bear the iniquity of the son" (Ezekiel 18:20, ESV).

"That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit" (John 3:6, ESV).

Application

While we may inherit sinful tendencies and experience earthly consequences of family patterns, personal faith in Christ offers spiritual rebirth and freedom from generational bondage.
