Overview
In the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus faced the reality of his impending crucifixion. He prayed with such intensity that he sweated drops of blood, asking the Father if there was any other way. Yet he ultimately submitted to God's will, saying, "Your will be done." His disciples, unable to comprehend the gravity of the moment, repeatedly fell asleep despite Jesus's pleas for them to watch and pray.
Key Scriptures
"And he said to them, 'My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here and watch with me.' And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed" (Matthew 26:38-39, ESV).
"And he said to Peter, 'So, could you not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak'" (Matthew 26:40-41, ESV).
Application
When facing trials, we must follow Christ's example of honest prayer and submission to God's will, while remaining vigilant in prayer rather than yielding to spiritual apathy.
