Ahijah found Jeroboam outside Jerusalem and dramatically tore his new cloak into twelve pieces. Giving ten pieces to Jeroboam, he declared that God would tear the kingdom from Solomon’s son, leaving only one tribe (Judah) for David’s line. However, Ahijah also warned Jeroboam that if he did not walk obediently, disaster would come. Years later, when Jeroboam’s son fell ill, the king’s wife disguised herself and visited the blind, elderly Ahijah, who pronounced judgment on Jeroboam’s house.
