Egyptians

The Egyptians were a significant ancient nation with whom Israel had frequent contact, both beneficial and complicated, revealing God's sovereignty over all peoples and nations.

Overview

Egypt plays an important role throughout Scripture as a major world power. The Egyptian people descended from Ham through Mizraim (Genesis 10:13-14). Israel's relationship with Egypt ranged from refuge during famine (Genesis 12:10) to slavery and deliverance, demonstrating God's power and faithfulness. Even centuries later, Egypt remained strategically important to Israel's survival and faith.

Key Scriptures

"So Pharaoh called Abram and said, 'What is this you have done to me?'" (Genesis 12:18, ESV). "Thus says the LORD: Behold, I am about to give the city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire. You shall not escape from his hand, but shall surely be captured and handed over to him" (Jeremiah 37:8-9, ESV). "You shall not abhor an Egyptian, because you were a sojourner in his land" (Deuteronomy 23:7, ESV).

Application

Remember that God governs all nations and peoples, and He calls us to treat others with dignity, even former enemies, recognizing our shared humanity as image-bearers of God.
