Overview
Taxation appears throughout Scripture as an established means of funding governmental operations and national projects. The Bible neither condemns taxation itself nor exempts believers from civil obligations, while simultaneously warning against excessive taxation and corruption. God's people are instructed to fulfill their tax obligations honestly and conscientiously.
Key Scriptures
"Jesus said to him, 'Then the sons are exempt. But so that we may not offend them, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours'" (Matthew 17:26-27, NIV).
"Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand on the seashore; they ate, they drank and they were happy. And Solomon ruled over all the kingdoms from the River to the land of the Philistines, as far as the border of Egypt. These countries brought tribute and were Solomon's subjects" (1 Kings 4:20-21, NIV).
Application
Believers should pay taxes faithfully as a matter of conscience and godliness, recognizing governmental authority while trusting God with their resources.
