Overview
Og was the last surviving king of the Rephaim, a race of giants who inhabited Bashan east of the Jordan River. When Israel advanced toward the Promised Land, Og opposed them in battle but was decisively defeated by Moses and the Israelites. His remarkable size and the extent of his kingdom made his defeat a powerful testimony to God's strength on behalf of His people.
Key Scriptures
"Then they turned and went up by the way of Bashan. And Og the king of Bashan came out against them, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei" (Numbers 21:33, ESV).
"So the LORD our God also gave into our hands Og the king of Bashan and all his people, and we struck him down until he had no survivors left" (Deuteronomy 3:2, ESV).
"For only Og king of Bashan was left of the remnant of the Rephaim. Behold, his bed was a bed of iron... nine cubits was its length and four cubits its breadth" (Deuteronomy 3:11, ESV).
Application
Just as God empowered Israel to overcome the giant Og, believers can trust that no earthly opposition can prevent God's purposes from being accomplished in their lives.
