Overview
The name Omri appears multiple times in Scripture, referring to different individuals across Israel's history. The most significant was King Omri of Israel (885-874 BC), who reigned for twelve years and is remembered for his political and military accomplishments, particularly the founding of Samaria. However, despite his earthly success, Scripture records that he "did evil in the sight of the Lord" (1 Kings 16:25, NASB).
Key Scriptures
"And Omri did evil in the sight of the Lord, and acted more wickedly than all who were before him" (1 Kings 16:25, NASB).
"So Omri slept with his fathers and was buried in Samaria; and Ahab his son became king in his place" (1 Kings 16:28, NASB).
The genealogical references in 1 Chronicles 7:8, 9:4, and 27:18 mention other individuals named Omri among the descendants of Benjamin and tribal leaders.
Application
Omri's legacy teaches that worldly success and influence mean nothing apart from obedience to God's Word and righteousness.
