King

80 scripture references across 11 subtopics — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

The Bible presents kingship as an institution ordained by God for the administration of justice and the welfare of the people. Kings are accountable to God's law and must rule with righteousness, compassion, and wisdom. Their authority is derivative, not absolute, and they remain subject to God's sovereignty and Word.

Key Scriptures

"Give the king Your judgments, O God, and Your righteousness to the royal son" (Psalm 72:1, NASB). "He will judge Your people with righteousness and Your afflicted with justice" (Psalm 72:2, NASB). "He will also deliver the needy when he cries for help, the afflicted also, and him who has no helper" (Psalm 72:12, NASB). "When he comes to sit on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself a copy of this law... that he may learn to fear the Lord his God" (Deuteronomy 17:18-19, ESV).

Application

Whether in civil leadership or positions of authority, believers should exercise their influence with justice, mercy, and submission to God's Word rather than personal ambition.
