Self-Examination

Self-examination is a spiritual discipline whereby believers honestly assess their hearts, motives, and conduct against Scripture to maintain fellowship with God and grow in holiness. It involves allowing the Holy Spirit to reveal sin, pride, and areas needing repentance.

Overview

Scripture calls believers to regular self-examination as a means of spiritual growth and maintaining a clear conscience before God. This practice involves honest assessment of our hearts, motivations, and actions in light of God's Word. Self-examination guards against self-deception and enables us to address sin promptly through repentance and confession.

Key Scriptures

"Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup" (1 Corinthians 11:28, ESV). "Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!" (Psalm 139:23-24, ESV). "If we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged" (1 Corinthians 11:31, ESV).

Application

Set aside regular time to prayerfully examine your heart against Scripture, confessing any sin discovered and asking God to align your thoughts and actions with His truth.
