Andrew

Andrew was one of Jesus' twelve apostles, known for his eagerness to bring others to Christ and his humble, supportive ministry alongside his brother Simon Peter.

The Calling of Andrew

Andrew first appears in the Gospels as a disciple of John the Baptist who immediately recognized Jesus as the Messiah. John 1:40-42 tells us that Andrew was one of two disciples who heard John the Baptist declare Jesus as "the Lamb of God" and followed Him. After spending time with Jesus, Andrew's first recorded action was to find his brother Simon Peter and declare, "We have found the Messiah." This beautiful moment shows Andrew's heart - he couldn't keep the good news to himself.

Matthew 4:18-20, Mark 1:16-18, and Luke 5:2-11 describe Jesus' formal calling of Andrew and Peter while they were fishing. When Jesus said, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men," both brothers immediately left their nets. This wasn't just a career change - it was a complete surrender to God's calling. Andrew demonstrated the kind of immediate obedience that marks true discipleship.

Andrew's Ministry and Character

Though Andrew lived somewhat in his brother Peter's shadow, his quiet faithfulness shines throughout the Gospel accounts. In John 6:8-9, during the feeding of the five thousand, it was Andrew who brought the boy with five loaves and two fish to Jesus. While others saw the impossibility of the situation, Andrew saw potential in what seemed insignificant. This reveals his practical faith and his role as a bridge-builder between people and Jesus.

John 12:20-22 shows Andrew again in his characteristic role as an introducer. When some Greeks wanted to meet Jesus, they approached Philip, who then went to Andrew. Together, they brought these seekers to Jesus. Andrew appears to have been approachable and willing to help others connect with the Savior. Mark 13:3 places him among the inner circle with Peter, James, and John, showing that Jesus valued his steady presence and faithfulness.

Lessons for Today's Believers

Andrew's example teaches us that effective ministry doesn't always require being in the spotlight. He was content to serve faithfully, bringing others to Jesus rather than seeking personal recognition. His life challenges us to be "introducers" - people who naturally connect others with Christ. Like Andrew, we can look for opportunities in everyday situations to point people toward Jesus, whether through a kind word, a helping hand, or simply sharing our testimony of God's goodness.

Andrew also shows us the power of starting with our own family. His first evangelistic act was reaching his brother Peter, who became the great apostolic leader. Sometimes the most important ministry we'll ever have is with those closest to us - our siblings, parents, children, and friends who know us best.

"He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, 'We have found the Messiah' (which is translated, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus." - John 1:41-42
