Treachery

Treachery is the act of betrayal and deception, often involving false friendship used to harm others. Scripture warns against both committing treachery and trusting in those who practice it.

Overview

Treachery involves deceit and betrayal, where someone uses false trust or friendship as a means to harm another. The Bible repeatedly condemns this sin and warns believers to be discerning about those they trust, recognizing that treacherous people speak smoothly while hiding evil intent.

Key Scriptures

"Their tongue is a deadly arrow; it speaks deceit. With their mouths they all speak cordially to their neighbors, but in their hearts they set traps for them" (Jeremiah 9:8, NIV).

Jehu's deception of Baal worshippers exemplifies treachery: "Now summon all the prophets of Baal, all his worshippers and all his priests. See that no one is missing, because I am going to hold a great sacrifice for Baal" (2 Kings 10:19, NIV), yet he planned their destruction.

Jael's act against Sisera demonstrates treachery in action: she invited him into her tent under false pretense of safety, then killed him while he slept (Judges 4:18-21).

Application

Guard your heart against treacherous people by testing words against actions, and ensure your own speech and conduct are marked by honesty and integrity rather than deception.
