Toe

The toe appears throughout Scripture in contexts of consecration, cleansing, and judgment, symbolizing completeness and submission to God's will.

Overview

While toes seem a minor physical detail, Scripture mentions them in significant spiritual moments. During priestly consecration and cleansing rituals, blood was applied to the right ear, thumb, and big toe, signifying that the whole person—from hearing to action—belonged to God. Toes also appear in accounts of judgment and humiliation.

Key Scriptures

"Then Moses took some of the blood that was on the altar and some of the anointing oil, and sprinkled it on Aaron and his garments, and also on his sons and his sons' garments with him. So he consecrated Aaron and his garments, and his sons and his sons' garments with him" (Leviticus 8:30, ESV). "The priest shall take some of the blood of the guilt offering, and the priest shall put it on the lobe of the right ear of the one to be cleansed and on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot" (Leviticus 14:14, ESV). "Adoni-bezek said, 'Seventy kings with their thumbs and their big toes cut off used to pick up scraps under my table'" (Judges 1:7, ESV).

Application

Reflect on whether your whole self—your hearing, your works, and your walk—is fully consecrated to serving the Lord.
