Asaph

A prominent Levite musician and seer appointed by King David as director of worship, credited with authoring twelve psalms.

Asaph was one of three Levites (with Heman and Ethan) placed over the music of the Tabernacle. He played cymbals before the Ark of the Covenant. His descendants continued as a guild of musicians and prophets in the Temple. The Psalms of Asaph (Psalms 50, 73-83) deal with the problem of evil, the prosperity of the wicked, and God's judgment. One of his descendants, also named Asaph, served as a gatekeeper and recorder under the Persian king Artaxerxes. Note: Please also read Psalm Chapters 50, 73-83.
