Abednego

The Babylonian name given to Azariah, a faithful Jewish companion of Daniel who was thrown into a fiery furnace for refusing to worship a golden idol.

Abednego (originally Azariah) was a young noble of Judah taken into captivity in Babylon. Along with Shadrach and Meshach (Hananiah and Mishael), he refused to bow to King Nebuchadnezzar’s golden statue. As punishment, he was thrown into a furnace heated seven times hotter than usual. He was saved by a divine figure (often interpreted as an angel or a pre-incarnate Christ) who walked with him in the flames, emerging without a single burn.
