Asa

The third king of Judah who reigned for 41 years and is remembered as a reformer who removed idolatry from the land.

Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, removing the male shrine prostitutes and all idols his father had made. He even deposed his grandmother Maacah from her position as queen mother for making an obscene image of Asherah. When the Ethiopian army of one million men and 300 chariots invaded, Asa cried out to God for help and won a decisive victory. However, late in his reign he relied on an alliance with Syria rather than God, and when diseased in his feet, he sought physicians rather than the Lord.
