Othniel

Othniel was the first judge of Israel, chosen by God to deliver His people from oppression and establish a pattern of faithful leadership.

Overview

Othniel, the son of Kenaz, rose as Israel's first judge after Joshua's generation. He was known for his courage, wisdom, and devotion to God. When the Israelites fell into sin and were oppressed by Cushan-rishathaim, God raised up Othniel to deliver them, ushering in a period of peace that lasted forty years.

Key Scriptures

"The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the LORD gave Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand" (Judges 3:10, ESV).

"Whoever strikes Kiriath-sepher and takes it, I will give him Achsah my daughter as wife" (Joshua 15:16, ESV).

"And the land had rest forty years. Then Othniel the son of Kenaz died" (Judges 3:11, ESV).

Application

Othniel's life demonstrates that God empowers faithful believers to overcome spiritual opposition and lead others toward righteousness when they yield to His Spirit.
