Mill

Mills were essential grinding devices in ancient Israel for processing grain into flour, serving both practical and symbolic purposes throughout Scripture. The mill's importance is reflected in biblical law, imagery, and prophetic warnings.

Overview

Mills were vital tools in ancient agrarian societies, used primarily to grind grain into flour for bread production. The millstone consisted of two circular stones, with the upper stone rotated against the lower one. Mills appear throughout Scripture as symbols of daily provision, judgment, and the continuation of normal life.

Key Scriptures

"Take no pledge of a widow's millstones, for that would be taking a pledge of her livelihood" (Deuteronomy 24:6, ESV). "The sound of a millstone will be heard no more at all in you" (Revelation 18:22, ESV). "They ground the manna in mills or beat it in mortars and boiled it in pots and made cakes of it" (Numbers 11:8, ESV).

Application

Reflect on how God provides daily sustenance and warns against taking what sustains others' livelihoods, recognizing both His provision and our responsibility toward the vulnerable.
