Anna was the daughter of Phanuel from the tribe of Asher. She had been married for seven years before being widowed, and she lived as a widow for 84 years, never leaving the Temple but worshiping with fasting and prayer. When Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus to the Temple for dedication, Anna approached them, gave thanks to God, and spoke about the child to everyone who was looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.
