Augustus (Caesar Augustus)

The first Roman emperor, Gaius Octavius, whose decree that all the world should be registered brought Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem, fulfilling the prophecy of the Messiah's birth.

Augustus reigned from 27 BC to AD 14. He established the Pax Romana (Roman Peace) and built roads that later aided the spread of the gospel. The census he ordered required Joseph to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem (his ancestral home), where Jesus was born, fulfilling Micah's prophecy. Caesar Augustus is never personally mentioned again in Scripture, but his census set the stage for the birth of Christ. He is the only Roman emperor named in the Gospels.
