Absalom was deeply loved by David. After Avenging his sister Tamar by killing his half-brother Amnon, he fled into exile. Upon returning, he “stole the hearts of the men of Israel” by acting as a judge at the city gate. He declared himself king in Hebron, forcing David to flee Jerusalem. The rebellion ended in the forest of Ephraim when Absalom’s long hair got caught in a great oak tree, leaving him hanging. Joab, David’s commander, killed him, leading to David’s famous lament: “O my son Absalom... would God I had died for thee!”
