Edification

Edification is the spiritual building up of believers through teaching, encouragement, and the exercise of spiritual gifts in love. It is a central purpose of the church and the gifts God has given to each member.

Overview

God designed the church as a community where believers strengthen one another spiritually. Edification occurs when the body of Christ functions properly, with each member using their gifts to encourage and develop others in faith. The goal of edification is maturity in Christ and unity among believers.

Key Scriptures

"And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ" (Ephesians 4:11-12, ESV).

"The one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation" (1 Corinthians 14:3, ESV).

"So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding" (Romans 14:19, ESV).

Application

Intentionally use your spiritual gifts and words to strengthen other believers, prioritizing their growth in Christ over your own prominence.
