Study Notes — Luke 11
6 sectionsLuke 11 presents Jesus as the Master of prayer, the Conqueror of darkness, and the Judge of spiritual blindness. The chapter opens with Jesus teaching His disciples the Lord's Prayer—a model for authentic communion with God—followed by a parable on persistence in prayer. The heart of the chapter shifts dramatically as Jesus casts out a demon and faces fierce opposition from religious leaders who attribute His power to Satan. Jesus responds with both logical refutation and solemn warnings about spiritual hardness of heart. The chapter closes with a devastating indictment of the Pharisees and lawyers, exposing their hypocrisy and their obstruction of God's kingdom.
One of Jesus' disciples, perhaps moved by witnessing His prayer life, asks Him to teach them to pray as John the Baptist had taught his own followers. Rather than a formula to be recited mindlessly, Jesus offers a prayer that becomes a template for all Christian prayer. The prayer begins with reverence ("Hallowed be thy name"), moves to submission to God's kingdom and will, then presents petitions for daily provision, forgiveness (with a condition attached—we must forgive others), and deliverance from temptation and evil. This prayer balances the vertical (our relationship with God) and horizontal (our relationships with one another). Notably, forgiveness appears as both a request and a responsibility.
Jesus illustrates prayer's power through a parable of a man who boldly approaches his friend at midnight for loaves of bread. Though the friend initially refuses due to inconvenience, the man's importunity (shameless persistence) moves him to help. The point is not that God is reluctant like the sleepy friend, but rather that persistent, bold prayer pleases Him. Verses 9–10 contain the golden promise: "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you." Jesus then uses an argument from the lesser to the greater: if earthly fathers give good gifts to their children, how much more will our heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask? This emphasizes that prayer's supreme answer is God's own Spirit dwelling within us, empowering and sanctifying our lives.
Jesus casts out a mute demon; the man speaks, and crowds marvel. But some accuse Jesus of working through Beelzebub, Satan's chief. Jesus exposes the logical absurdity: a kingdom divided cannot stand. If He cast out demons by Satan's power, Satan would be destroying his own kingdom—nonsense. Moreover, even Jewish exorcists cast out demons; by the accusers' logic, they too would be satanic. But Jesus' power is "the finger of God," evidence that God's kingdom has arrived. Verses 21–22 use the image of a strong man guarding his palace; Jesus is the stronger One who binds Satan and plunders his goods. Verses 24–26 contain a sobering warning: an unclean spirit cast out may return with seven others worse than itself, leaving the final condition worse than the first. This teaches that mere external reformation without filling the void with God's presence and truth courts spiritual disaster.
A woman blesses Jesus' mother, but He redirects: true blessing belongs to those who hear and obey God's Word. Jesus then denounces the generation's demand for signs, offering only the sign of Jonah (His resurrection). He appeals to history: the Queen of Sheba and Ninevites will condemn this generation at judgment, for they responded to less revelation. Jesus' teaching on the eye (verses 34–36) reveals that our spiritual vision determines our entire inner state; an undivided eye filled with light produces a luminous life, while an evil eye brings darkness.
At a Pharisee's dinner, Jesus critiques their obsession with outward purity while neglecting justice and God's love. He pronounces woes on the lawyers for burdening people with rules they themselves ignore, and for blocking entrance to God's kingdom. The chapter ends with religious leaders actively seeking to entrap Jesus.
Luke 11 calls us to persistent, humble prayer rooted in God's generosity, to vigilance against spiritual complacency, and to prioritize inner transformation over external appearance. Like the disciples, we must learn to pray; like the persistent friend, we must ask boldly; and like those who heard Jesus, we must let God's Word reshape our hearts, not merely our behavior.
