Study Notes — Genesis 27
7 sectionsGenesis 27 records one of the Bible's most sobering accounts of deception within a family. As Isaac approaches death, he intends to pass the covenant blessing to his eldest son Esau through a sacred ritual meal. However, Rebekah and Jacob conspire to deceive the aging, blind Isaac so that Jacob receives the blessing instead. Though God had already promised Jacob the greater inheritance (Genesis 25:23), this chapter shows how human schemes to fulfill God's purposes often corrupt the very blessing we seek. The passage illustrates the serious consequences of sin, even when our ultimate end is aligned with God's will.
Isaac, now old and losing his eyesight, calls his eldest son Esau to him with a clear purpose: to bestow upon him the patriarchal blessing before death. Isaac asks Esau to hunt venison and prepare a meal, promising that after eating, he will bless his son before the Lord (v. 7). This blessing was not merely sentimental; it was the transfer of the Abrahamic covenant and God's promise of dominion and prosperity. Rebekah overhears this conversation and immediately hatches a plan to divert the blessing to her favored son Jacob. Her swift action reveals a heart bent on manipulation rather than faith in God's promise.
Rebekah instructs Jacob to fetch two goats so she can prepare the savoury meat Isaac loves. Jacob's hesitation is significant: he fears his deception will be discovered and he will receive a curse, not a blessing (v. 12). His mother dismisses his concern with the bold declaration, "Upon me be thy curse, my son" (v. 13). This is a chilling moment—Rebekah claims responsibility for the sin, encouraging Jacob to disobey his father through outright deception. Despite his reservations, Jacob obeys his mother. The text makes clear that both Rebekah and Jacob act with premeditation and conscious violation of the fifth commandment (honor thy father).
Rebekah disguises Jacob in Esau's clothing and covers his smooth skin with goatskin to mimic Esau's hairiness. When Jacob approaches his father, Isaac's suspicions are aroused—the venison has been found too quickly (v. 20). Notably, Jacob invokes God's name in his lie (v. 20), compounding the sin by using the Lord's name as cover for deceit. Isaac's investigation brings him near to the truth; he recognizes Jacob's voice but is fooled by the physical disguise. The irony is painful: Isaac's dimmed eyes, which necessitated the tactile test, are the very weakness exploited by the deception.
Isaac eats, drinks, and embraces his supposed son, then pronounces the covenant blessing. The blessing itself is magnificent: dominion over nations, servitude from Jacob's brethren, and the promise that those who curse him will be cursed and those who bless him will be blessed. Yet it is obtained through lies and betrayal. The blessing is valid—Isaac cannot and will not retract it—but it is forever stained by the method of its acquisition.
Esau returns with his own prepared venison only to discover the truth. His anguish is profound and genuine (v. 34). Isaac, trembling, confirms that Jacob has obtained the blessing through subtlety (v. 35). Esau's bitter complaint—"Is not he rightly named Jacob? for he hath supplanted me"—reflects the meaning of Jacob's name (v. 36). Though Isaac offers Esau a secondary blessing of earthly prosperity, it includes the heavy burden that Esau shall serve thy brother (v. 40). Esau's pain and Rebekah's satisfaction conceal the real tragedy: a family fractured by sin.
Esau's hatred leads him to plot Jacob's murder. Rebekah, learning of this threat, sends Jacob away to her brother Laban in Haran, framing it as a brief departure. What Rebekah intends as temporary becomes permanent; Jacob will not see his mother again in this life (v. 45). The deception that secured the blessing has now cost Jacob his home, his family, and his peace. Rebekah's final pretext—concern over Jacob marrying a Canaanite woman—adds another layer of manipulation.
This passage warns us never to use sinful means to achieve godly ends. God had already promised Jacob the blessing; Rebekah's and Jacob's deception was unnecessary and destructive. When we scheme and manipulate to secure what God has promised, we dishonor Him and harm ourselves and others. True faith trusts God's timing and His methods. The wounds inflicted in chapter 27 ripple through generations.
