Overview
Throughout Scripture, watchmen served critical protective roles, stationed on walls and towers to observe approaching threats. Spiritually, God appointed watchmen among His people to sound warnings of judgment and call people to repentance. The watchman's faithfulness in warning others directly affected whether people received God's message of danger.
Key Scriptures
"So you, son of man, I have made a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me" (Ezekiel 33:7, ESV).
"If the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any one of them, that person is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at the watchman's hand" (Ezekiel 33:6, ESV).
"On the roof of one [stood] a watchman continually; and he cried out, 'A chariot of horses!' And another answered, 'A chariot of horses!' And he called out, 'Rider on rider!' Then he answered, 'Babylon has fallen, has fallen'" (Isaiah 21:9, NASB).
Application
Believers today are called to watchfulness in prayer and discernment, warning others of spiritual danger while faithfully proclaiming God's truth.
