Rabbi

20 scripture references across 6 subtopics — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

The word "rabbi" (Hebrew: ??????) literally means "my master" and was a common title of honor for Jewish teachers and leaders. In the Gospels, Jesus is frequently addressed as Rabbi by His disciples and others, acknowledging His role as a teacher of God's Word. However, Jesus taught that ultimate spiritual authority belongs to God alone, not to human titles or positions.

Key Scriptures

"But you are not to be called 'Rabbi,' for you have only one Master, and you are all brothers" (Matthew 23:8, NIV). "Jesus said, 'What do you want me to do for you?' The blind man said, 'Rabbi, I want to see'" (Mark 10:51, NIV). "Jesus answered, 'You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.' Then he said, 'Very truly I tell you, you will see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man'" (John 1:50-51, NIV).

Application

Recognize Jesus' supreme authority as Teacher and Lord while avoiding elevating human leaders to inappropriate spiritual status.
