Levites, the

271 scripture references across 20 subtopics — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

The Levites were designated by God as the priestly tribe responsible for maintaining the tabernacle, later the temple, and assisting Aaron in religious duties. They received no territorial inheritance in Canaan but were supported through tithes collected from the other tribes. Their organization and responsibilities evolved throughout Israel's history, particularly during David's reign when they were formally arranged into divisions for specific functions.

Key Scriptures

"When you receive from the people of Israel the tithe that I give you from them as your inheritance, you shall give from it the LORD's contribution to Aaron the priest" (Numbers 18:28, ESV).

"David organized the Levites into divisions corresponding to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari" (1 Chronicles 23:6, ESV).

"The Levites were to help Aaron and his sons in the service of the house of the LORD" (1 Chronicles 23:28, ESV).

Application

Recognize that God provides for those committed to His work, and consider how your own tithe and giving support the ministry of the local church today.
