Zechariah

Zechariah was a righteous priest and prophet in Old Testament Israel whose faithful witness led to his martyrdom. His death became a symbol of resistance to God's truth and rejection of His messengers.

Overview

Multiple men named Zechariah appear throughout Scripture, but the most notable is the son of Jehoiada the priest during the reign of King Joash. This Zechariah boldly proclaimed God's Word, calling people to return to the Lord, but was ultimately murdered within the temple courts for his faithfulness. Jesus Himself referenced this martyrdom as a pivotal moment in Israel's rejection of God's prophets.

Key Scriptures

"Then the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, and he stood above the people and said to them, 'Thus says God: Why do you transgress the commandments of the Lord, so that you cannot prosper?' Because you have forsaken the Lord, he has forsaken you." (2 Chronicles 24:20, ESV)

"As they were stoning him, he cried out, 'Lord, do not hold this sin against them!'" (Acts 7:59, recounting similar faithful witnesses)

Application

Believers today should follow Zechariah's example of boldly proclaiming biblical truth regardless of personal cost, trusting God's faithfulness over earthly acceptance.
