Overview
A witness is one who testifies to the truth based on personal knowledge or observation. Scripture emphasizes both the privilege and responsibility of bearing witness—whether in legal contexts, before courts, or in spiritual testimony. False witness is explicitly condemned as sin, while truthful testimony is honored as righteous conduct.
Key Scriptures
"The first to plead his case seems right, until another comes and examines him" (Proverbs 18:17, ESV). "Whoever walks blamelessly and does what is right and speaks truth in his heart...swears to his own hurt and does not change" (Psalms 15:2, 4, ESV). "If anyone sins in that he hears a public adjuration to testify, and though he is a witness, whether he has seen or come to know the matter, if he does not speak up, then he shall bear his iniquity" (Leviticus 5:1, ESV).
Application
As believers, we must commit to speaking truth faithfully in all circumstances, understanding that honest witness honors God and reflects our commitment to His Word.
