Edomites

The Edomites were descendants of Esau who occupied the region southeast of the Dead Sea and were frequently at odds with Israel. Scripture records God's judgment against Edom for their pride, violence, and hostility toward God's people.

Overview

Edom was a nation descended from Esau, Jacob's brother, and occupied territory in what is now southern Jordan. The Edomites maintained a complicated relationship with Israel marked by conflict and enmity. Throughout Scripture, God pronounced judgment against Edom for their violence and refusal to help Israel in times of need.

Key Scriptures

"Thus says the Lord GOD: Because Edom acted revengefully against the house of Judah and has grievously offended in taking vengeance on them..." (Ezekiel 25:12, ESV)

"And I will lay My vengeance on Edom by the hand of My people Israel. Therefore they will act in Edom according to My anger and according to My wrath" (Ezekiel 25:14, NASB)

"Thus says the Lord GOD to Mount Seir: Behold, I am against you, and I will stretch out My hand against you and make you a desolation and a waste" (Ezekiel 35:3, NIV)

Application

Believers should recognize that God judges nations and individuals who persistently oppose His people and reject His authority, reminding us of His ultimate justice and sovereignty.
