Sacred Consecration and Divine Appointment
Throughout Scripture, anointing with oil served as God's chosen method for setting apart people and objects for holy purposes. Exodus 30:25 describes the preparation of "holy anointing oil" used to consecrate the tabernacle and its furnishings. This sacred oil was not ordinary—it represented God's presence and blessing upon what was anointed.
The most significant examples of anointing involve the appointment of leaders. First Samuel 10:1 records Samuel anointing Saul as Israel's first king, while 1 Samuel 16:13 describes David's anointing, after which "the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon David from that day on." These anointings weren't mere ceremonies—they marked divine selection and empowerment. Similarly, 1 Kings 19:16 shows Elijah anointing Elisha as his prophetic successor, demonstrating that anointing extended beyond political leadership to spiritual ministry.
The Ultimate Anointed One
The Hebrew word "Messiah" and Greek word "Christ" both mean "anointed one," pointing to Jesus as the ultimate fulfillment of this biblical pattern. Luke 4:18 records Jesus declaring, "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor." This wasn't a ceremonial anointing with oil, but the divine commissioning of God's Son for His redemptive mission.
Acts 10:38 beautifully summarizes this reality: "God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him." Jesus received the Spirit's anointing for His earthly ministry, demonstrating that true anointing comes from God's Spirit, not human ceremony. This divine anointing equipped Him to be our Prophet, Priest, and King—the roles traditionally filled by those who received ceremonial anointing in the Old Testament.
Our Participation in Christ's Anointing
As believers united with Christ, we share in His anointing. Second Corinthians 1:21-22 declares that God "anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts." This means every Christian has received a spiritual anointing—we are set apart for God's purposes and empowered by His Spirit. First John 2:20 reminds us that we "have an anointing from the Holy One," giving us spiritual understanding and connection to God.
This truth should encourage us that God has equipped us for the work He's called us to do. Whether in our families, workplaces, or churches, we serve with divine anointing—not because of our abilities, but because of God's Spirit within us. We are His anointed people, called to represent Him faithfully in every area of life.
But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth. - 1 John 2:20
