The Nature and Purpose of Angels
Scripture reveals angels as powerful spiritual beings created by God to serve Him and accomplish His purposes. Psalm 103:20 declares, "Praise the Lord, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word." These heavenly messengers appear throughout both Old and New Testaments as God's agents of communication, protection, and judgment.
Angels possess intelligence, will, and emotion, yet they are distinct from humanity. They do not marry or reproduce (Matthew 22:30), and they were created before mankind. Their primary role is worship and service to God, as seen in Isaiah's vision where seraphim cry "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty" (Isaiah 6:3). They also serve as messengers, as the Greek word "angelos" literally means messenger.
Angels in Biblical History
Throughout Scripture, we see angels actively involved in God's redemptive plan. They announced Christ's birth to Mary (Luke 1:26-38) and to the shepherds (Luke 2:8-14). An angel strengthened Jesus in Gethsemane during His agony (Luke 22:43), and angels proclaimed His resurrection (Matthew 28:2-7). The book of Revelation shows angels playing crucial roles in end-time events and eternal worship.
Angels also provided protection and guidance to God's people. They delivered Lot from Sodom, fed Elijah in the wilderness, and shut the lions' mouths for Daniel. In Acts, angels repeatedly intervened to free the apostles from prison and guide the early church's mission. These accounts demonstrate God's care for His people through angelic ministry.
Angels and Believers Today
While we should never worship angels (Colossians 2:18), Scripture teaches that they continue to minister to believers. Hebrews 1:14 asks, "Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?" This doesn't mean we should expect dramatic angelic visitations, but we can take comfort knowing that God may use these powerful beings to work on our behalf in ways we cannot see.
As believers, we should focus on worshiping God rather than being overly curious about angels. Yet their example of complete obedience and wholehearted worship should inspire us to serve our Lord with similar devotion and humility.
