Ahisamach

Ahisamach was a Danite craftsman whose son Oholiab worked alongside Bezalel to construct the sacred tabernacle and its furnishings for Israel's worship.

The Father of a Master Craftsman

Ahisamach appears in Scripture as the father of Oholiab, one of two master craftsmen chosen by God to build the tabernacle. Exodus 31:6 records God's words to Moses: "And I, behold, I have given with him Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan: and in the hearts of all that are wise hearted I have put wisdom, that they may make all that I have commanded thee." This divine appointment reveals God's sovereign choice in selecting not just individuals, but entire family lines to serve His purposes.

The name Ahisamach means "my brother has supported" or "brother of support," which beautifully reflects the supportive role his family played in Israel's spiritual life. Though we know little about Ahisamach personally, his significance lies in raising a son whom God would use for one of the most important construction projects in biblical history. This reminds us that faithful parenting often bears fruit in ways we may never fully see or understand.

Legacy Through Faithful Service

Exodus 35:34 further emphasizes the special calling on Oholiab's life: "And he hath put in his heart that he may teach, both he, and Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan." Oholiab was not only gifted as a craftsman but also as a teacher, passing on his God-given skills to others. The repeated mention of Ahisamach's name in connection with this sacred work suggests that godly character and values were transmitted from father to son.

Exodus 38:23 records the completion of this work: "And with him was Oholiab, son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, an engraver, and a cunning workman, and an embroiderer in blue, and in purple, and in scarlet, and fine linen." The detailed description of Oholiab's skills reflects the excellence that marked his work for God's house. Behind this skilled craftsman stood a father who had invested in his son's character and abilities.

Practical Application for Today's Believers

Ahisamach's example encourages Christian parents to recognize that their faithful investment in their children's spiritual and practical development can have far-reaching Kingdom impact. We may never see our names recorded in Scripture, but like Ahisamach, we can raise children who serve God with excellence and integrity. Every skill, talent, and gift we help develop in our children can become tools in God's hands for His glory.

Furthermore, Ahisamach reminds us that God uses ordinary families to accomplish extraordinary purposes. The tabernacle's construction required not just Moses' leadership, but also the faithful preparation of craftsmen like Oholiab—and behind him, the influence of his father Ahisamach. Our faithfulness in seemingly small things may be preparing the next generation for significant service in God's Kingdom.
